you dont have a personality
Capitalism and fast fashion are trendy right now.
If you are into tiktok or any form of social media you probably have seen a lot of people saying or commenting stuff like "What are the cool girls wearing this autumn?" "What shoes are we wearing this year?" And I'll you can think when reading this is: "Why don't they think for their selves and decide what to wear?"
Micro trends and fast fashion are getting stronger than ever. In case you don't know what this is "microtrend" refers to when some piece of clothes get extremely popular but stops being used in a very short spawn of time, for example bows were considered coquette and aesthetic for two months and everyone had a hoodie or hair clip with a bow on it, but someone decided they aren't cool anymore so people stopped wearing them and probably to the end of this year everyone will be like "yes bows are so cringe omg I don't know why we wore them" or something like that. That's pretty much the entire fast fashion cycle and you can apply that scheme to any other micro trends (cowboy boots, 2020 bucket hats, Mary Jane's in sporty outfits, jorts...) Now people are renovating their closet every season and that isn't normal.
That's why everyone is like "I was so cringe last year" is because they were just following trends and now that the trends are gone their personality is too, (2020 is the best example of this) and until they find they're true self they will keep thinking their past year their selves were embarrassing or whatever.
Other of the reasons I'm blaming to this phenomenon are the "cores" and "aesthetics: Cutecore, cottagecore, coquette, y2k, Stockholm style, weirdcore... (this sounds dystopian at this point) And I'm saying this as someone who loves the downtown style, aesthetics are okay for inspiration but basing you're entire personality in a random tiktok concept isn't, it's pretty sad to me think that people are able to describe their selves in one word. For this reason I beg you to don't name your style don't limite yourself, wear whatever you like, listen to whatever music you like don't matter if it doesn't "match your vibe".
The main reason why people look all the same those days is the demonization of individuality. Whenever someone dress ""different"" or has different interests or hobbies is made fun of or is accused of being "desperate for attention". Don't be scared of wearing whatever you like, I now it's hard specially if you are from a very small town (same girl) but someday you will look back and regret don't doing the things you liked when you were younger. But trust me most of people don't care that much about others, everyone is too busy in their own stuff to care about what you are wearing even if it feels like everyone is looking at you.
I talked about fashion in this note but what I said can apply to any form of consumption media you can think of.
So, how can we solve this? If you are trying to leave the fast fashion cycle I have some tips:
1. Try to disconnect from social media fashion until you find your vibe, so you won't be influenced by others
2. Avoid buying Inditex, shein or other fast fashion brands
3. Try buying stuff in thrift stores if you are american and if you are european vinted will forever be your best option.
4. Remember when you are shopping that local shops and small business prices are higher than fast fashion brands, but they are way better quality and you will use them longer (for example, is better to buy a 70 buckets coat that you really like and will use for years rather than buying a 10 buckets coat for shein that is lower quality and end up buying a new one every month, at the end you will spend more money)
5. When looking for inspiration don't copy and entire outfit, look at the statement pieces, what about this outfit do you like so much?
6. Build a wardrobe with pieces that match with eachother (kinda obvious)

ReplyDeleteI was also thinking like you, like the way you've written. Its true that today's generation is wholly dependent over social media, influencers, etc etc and we really don't have our very own style. All we do is follow some microtrends and then when the trend ends the cloths we've bought is called to be outdated and not in style anymore, which is really sad cuz people should find out their own personality.
ReplyDeleteI did your checku quiz and you seem so cool!! Love the blog entry, it’s so real

ReplyDeleteLiterally, its gets to a point that is even sad as you mentioned the lack of personality having a "core" define yourself
